Bonfire Night!

This fiery celebration was originally founded by King James I to commemorate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the King and Parliament on November 5th 1605, with the Catholic Guy Fawkes being the principle villain. These days it’s less about religious conflict, and more about firework displays and a good party. London naturally has numerous public events with lavish fireworks displays and some blazing bonfires where space allows. Here’s a selection that you may want to check out for your own Bonfire Night experience. Heck, why not make a week of it?

The Lord Mayor’s Show

If it’s pomp and pageantry that you are after, then you need to head down to The City of London for The Lord Mayor’s Show.

Dating back to the early 13th century, The Lord Mayor’s Show started when King John rashly allowed the City of London to appoint its own Mayor. The King insisted that each newly-elected Mayor should come to Westminster and swear loyalty to the Crown, and the Mayor of London has been making that journey for over 800 years. Around The Mayor grew up the colourful, joyous procession and pageantry that over the centuries became known as the Lord Mayor’s Show. It’s quite the sight, and well worth seeing in our opinion.

It takes place on November 12th, and you’ll find more details HERE.

BUD X FIFA Fan Festival

And finally, football. With this year’s controversially timed FIFA World Cup 22 taking place in equally controversial Qatar, it’s not so easy for most fans to make the pilgrimage and see their teams in action. With that in mind, FIFA are setting up fan villages in major cities with streaming of matches on big screens. The London BUD X FIFA Fan Festival takes place November 21st, 25th, 29th and on 3rd and 4th of December. Experience the energy of the tournament at Europe’s first official FIFA Fan Festival in the heart of central London on Tottenham Court Road.

That’s only a short walk from us here at Euston Square Hotel, so it’ll be easy to get in on the action! For more details and ticket info, see the official site HERE.
