November is a great time to visit London, offering fewer crowds and unique seasonal charm. The city dazzles with early Christmas lights and window displays in the shops, while cozy pubs become the perfect retreats from the crisp air. With festive markets, quieter museums, and scenic autumn walks, London in November is both vibrant and intimate. Here’s a few of our suggestions for things to see and do this month.
Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night, lights up London’s skies every November 5th in a thrilling display of fireworks, bonfires, and tradition. The origins of this celebration date back to 1605, when a group of conspirators, led by Guy Fawkes, plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in a bid to overthrow King James I. When the “Gunpowder Plot” was foiled, Londoners began lighting bonfires in relief, so the story goes, thus establishing a tradition that has carried on for centuries.
Today, London celebrates with vibrant displays across the city, from iconic spots like Alexandra Palace to Battersea Park. Visitors gather to enjoy roaring bonfires, food stalls, and lively family-friendly festivities, making it a memorable autumn event. Remember to dress warmly, as London nights can be chilly in November, and arrive early to secure a good view of the fireworks. Bonfire Night captures the spirit of London’s storied past in a vivid, modern celebration. Find some of the best Bonfire Night celebrations here. Please be aware that you will need to purchase tickets and plan in advance, so we recommend you do a little research. For a cheap way to enjoy the night, head up to Primrose Hill for a panoramic view of the city.
The Lord Mayor’s Show, the world’s oldest and longest civic procession, returns to London on November 9, 2024, departing from Mansion House at 11 a.m. This historic parade dates back to the early 13th century, when King John allowed the City of London to elect its own Mayor. To ensure loyalty, each new Mayor was required to journey to Westminster to pledge allegiance to the Crown—a tradition that has continued for over 800 years.
This year, the 696th Lord Mayor, Alderman Alastair King of Queenhithe Ward, will take office in the Silent Ceremony a day before the show. The procession, a joyful mix of colour and tradition, then escorts him to Westminster for his official oath, showcasing London’s rich history and civic pride. Don’t miss this iconic parade, packed with pageantry, and free to attend. Plan your day here.
